Emerging out of the Berkshires, it’s an American master. From his studio in Stockbridge, MA, Norman Rockwell captured our country’s spirit in iconic paintings. I am blessed to live within an hour’s drive of the museum named after him. As an illustrator, I could never find a better place to get inspired.
Nathaniel Hawthorne
As we live through this modern-day pandemic, I’ve been reading a lot of nonfiction, but also finding escapism through classic literature. One particular story which was assigned way back in high school English class, Young Goodman Brown, has always stuck with me. Having recently reread it, this devilish tale still spooks the hell out of me. The author is the descendant of a judge who presided in the Salem Witch Trials. With that kind of family lineage, no wonder his writing is so vivid and haunting.

Henry David Thoreau
Living the majority of his life within the borders of this map, Henry David Thoreau would dream big ideas on Walden Pond. His essay, Civil Disobedience, is an argument for peaceful protest against an unjust state. Right now, while our leaders consistently favor corporations over everyday people, this concept is more vital than ever.

Noam Chomsky
Noam Chomsky is a professor, linguist, philosopher, social critic, and political activist - all wrapped into one person. I drew this portrait of him on a map which includes Lexington, MA (where he called home for many years), and Cambridge, MA (where he taught at MIT for many years). His opinions are both knowledgable and humanist, and I look to for a realistic (and sober) view of world affairs. I admire him greatly.

Ezra Koenig
I attempted a portrait of Ezra Koenig, the frontman of one of my favorite bands, Vampire weekend. He’s written some beautiful tunes about Capre Cod, which sparked this idea.
