Artist Statement
I’m fascinated by two of the earliest forms of human abstract thought, map-making and picture-making. Having grown up around maps, I’ve always been intrigued by the mystery behind what cartography represents. With my own background in illustration, I’ve had a life-long passion for drawing and picture-making. I’m interested in what can be conveyed when maps and pictures are intermingled in one image. What can come out of the marriage of two forms of abstract thought? In my process, I find pre-existing maps, and meditate on what they represent to me, in both a macro and micro sense. In treating these cartographic images as canvases, they become a springboard for exploring a variety of themes: identity, national and local pride, history, nature, politics etc. Each map transforms into a window of sorts, with an observation about the place it represents. In one sense, I’m exploring the world vicariously through maps. In another sense, I’m hoping to land on truths that resonate with myself and the viewer.
