Daniel Baxter Clint Eastwood portrait.jpg

Spaghetti Western

Daniel Baxter February 28, 2018

You effortlessly traverse the topography of both tumbleweeds and Tinseltown. How ironic to give a face to the American West, when your name is Clint Eastwood.

Vigil Honoring Victims of Gun Violence

Daniel Baxter February 20, 2018

This sketch may be rain soaked, but bad weather didn’t stop a wonderful crowd from standing in vigil to honor students and teachers killed by gun violence. If we're really a civilized society, we've got to value Public Safety over gun rights!

A Niagara Perch

Daniel Baxter February 19, 2018

A Niagara Perch

Tattooed across peaceful shores,
between this lake of childhood frolics,
and an undertow of uncertain fortunes,
waterfalls and whirlpools beckon from below,
pulling for a tumble into uncharted territory.

The Emergent Mind

Daniel Baxter February 17, 2018

This piece for Harvard Magazine accompanies a story called The Emergent Mind. It’s about a research study which shows that infants are capable of abstract thought. They’re able to understand “patterns of activity in terms of variables like cost and reward”. Below are sketches I submitted for this project. A special thanks to Jennifer Carling for a fascinating assignment!

Riverdale Country School

Daniel Baxter February 15, 2018

Here’s a little drawing commissioned by my friends at Riverdale Country School. It’s unique shape was designed to fit on envelopes containing promotional material about the school. I was asked to illustrate this quote by the school’s founder, Frank Sutliff Hackett:  “It is not the work done which inspires enthusiasm, but the work to be done -- the long vista and the yet unfolded close.”

A special thanks to Cicely Upham and Marie Capasso for this fun assignment.

Daniel Baxter Mike Tyson Brooklyn portrait - print size.jpg

Mike Tyson

Daniel Baxter January 16, 2018

Here's my charcoal portrait of boxer, Mike Tyson, one of the most complex characters to come out of Brooklyn. He's a combination of fierceness, sensitivity, intelligence, volatility and self-depreciating humor - all wrapped into one larger-than-life human being. Prints of this piece are available here!

I took this group portrait of some recent drawings. "Mike Tyson" measures 18" by 22".

Polar Bear

Daniel Baxter January 15, 2018

In recognition of the frigid weather which is affecting the northeastern United States, I was compelled to draw a polar bear. It's a nice companion piece to another drawing I did in December (below). Prints of this piece are available here!

Dallas Magazine Illustrations

Daniel Baxter January 12, 2018

I had the pleasure of creating these tiny spot illustrations for Dallas Magazine. They accompany a story about Marcus Hines, a Texas real estate developer who likes to brag about his net worth, has powerful political connections, owns lots of expensive toys, and doesn’t always treat women very nicely. For some reason, he sounds familiar to another celebrity real estate developer we all know. Thanks to art director, Kevin Goodbar, for this fun assignment! Below are a few of the sketches I submitted.

Custom Holiday Cards

Every Christmas I draw custom cards in celebration of our four-legged family members. It's fun to give loved ones little original drawings. Here are a few examples from the last three years.

Sivananda BahamasYoga

Daniel Baxter January 8, 2018

I had the pleasure of illustrating yoga poses for SivinandaBahamas.org. The assignment included illustrating 12 central postures of this practice, as well as the sun salutation. It felt surreal to be illustrating warm beach scenes while sitting in the frigid Hudson Valley! You can follow these poses on their blog. Thanks to art director Elena Erber for this enlightening assignment.

Rutgers Line Drawings

Daniel Baxter January 8, 2018

I love brainstorming clever concepts for illustration assignments, but that can sap a lot of mental energy. It was a nice change of pace to create these simple line drawings for my friends at Rutgers Magazine. They accompany four profiles of new faculty members - who specialize in everything from the study of Lyme Disease to feminism in Iraq. Thanks to art director John VanCleaf for this fun assignment.

Daniel Baxter November 29, 2017

Here's a drawing on a map of the the Arctic regions.  This is part of a series called World Tour - in which all the pieces are drawn on vintage maps. I was studying this map, and it seemed to be telling me to draw a polar bear on it. So I did! Signed prints are available here!
